Kanpur is the biggest city of the state and is main centre of commercial and industrial activities. Formerly known as Manchester of the country is now also called the commercial capital of the state. It is situated on the most important national highways no. 2 & 25 and state highway.

It is also situated on the main Delhi-Howrah railway trunk line. It is situated on bank of holy river Ganga and is about 126 meters above the sea level. Presently there is civilian air-service available for Kolkata and New Delhi from air port Chakeri (Ahirwan) Kanpur. The another civilian airport Amausi (Lucknow) is 70Km. away from Kanpur.

History of Kanpur Nagar

Kanpur is a transformed version of its original name Kanhapur given by the two rulers Hindu Singh of Sachendi and Ghanshyam Singh of Ramaipur. The British ruler Hobson Johnson found the word difficult to pronounce and he changed it to Cawnpore. Later it came close to its name as Kanpur. The independent emergence of its new district recorded historical pangs.

  • Kanpur Divided into two district namely Kanpur-Nagar and Kanpur Dehat in year 1977.
  • Reunited again in year 1979.
  • Again separated in year 1981.
  • The decision of establishing the District Headquarters in Akbarpur(MATI).
  • The District was renamed as Kanpur Dehat as on 3-July-2010.
  • The District has been renamed as Kanpur Dehat on 30-July-2012.
  • Kanpur Dehat has 05 Tehsils and 10 Development Blocks. There are 102 Nyay Panchayats and 612 Gram Sabhas in this district. The distribution of Development Block in Tehsils is given in the following table.

Places to Visit

Kanpu

r is an important historical town. This is the birth place of Ganesh Shankar Vidhyarthi & the poet of "Jhanda Uncha Rahe hamara" Sh. Shyam Lal Gupta "Parshad".

A zoo of international standard is also situated in Kanpur. The parts of ancient structure & monuments of the time of King Yayati can be seen in Jajmau.

There is 350 years old only manuscript of Gurugranth Sahib and certified with the signature of Bhai Banno Sahib is also available in "Gurudwara Banno Sahib". A museum can also be seen in Phool Baugh.

On the bank of holy river Ganga, following holy ghats can also be seen.

Bithoor

This holy and historical place is situated 21 kms. away from Kanpur on the bank of holy river Ganga. Besides Kashi, the holy place Bithoor is decorated with maximum nos. of beautiful ghats. The Bithoor is also known as "Brahmvart" (The creation place of Manu and Satrupa).

It is also believed that Maharshi Balmiki has created the first Mahagrantha of Hindu "Ramayana" here & Lav & Kush was born & brought up in his Aashram. Ramel is the place where Awadh Naresh Shri Ram met with Lav & Kush after Ashwamegha Yagya.

Maharani Laxmi bai spent her childhood here and this is the work place of freedom fighters like Tatya Tope, Azimullah Khan, Mainavati& Nanarao Peshwa.

The temples of Gupta period can also be seen 32 kms away from Kanpur.

Kannauj, the city of perfumes is also situated on G.T. road 80 kms. away from Kanpur. The city was very famous during the period of Harshavardhan.

Green Park, a cricket stadium of international standard is also situated in Kanpur.

How to Reach

Air

Indian Airlines flights fly from Delhi to Kanpur and return via Lucknow. The nearest airport is Chakeri which is 13 km down town Kanpur.There are Indian Airlines coaches for travel to the city.

Rail

Kanpur, on the main broad gauge route between Delhi and Calcutta, is connected to all parts of the country by Express/Superfast trains.

Road

On National Highway 2 (Delhi-Agra-Allahabad-Calcutta) and 25 (Lucknow-Jhansi-Shivpuri) Kanpur is 79 km from Lucknow; 193 km from Allahabad; 329 km from Varanasi; 398 km from Khajuraho; 269 km from Agra; 222 km Jhansi, 438 km from Delhi, 1007 km from Calcutta, 1345 km from Bombay, 1998 km from Madras and 369 km from Bhopal.

Bus

Buses of the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation and the SRTCs of neighbouring states connect Kanpur to various centers in the region, such as Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Agra, Unnao, Rae Bareilly, Kannauj and Jhansi. UPSRTC bus stands are at Collectorganj and Chunniganj.

Local Transport

Taxis, Tempo-Rickshaws, Auto-Rickshaws, Cycle-Rickshaw, Horse-Tongas and City Bus Services are available for local transport. Cabs are available from Canal Road Taxi Stand and from various hotels and travel agencies. Rates are always negotiable.
