Vaidehi Vatika Sitapur

Sitapur as the name depicts, was established by the king Vikarmaditya after the name of Lord Ram's wife Sita. The significance of this place has been throughout the ancient, medieval and modern history. This is a land of seer and sufis. Purans were written by Rishi Ved Vyas on this holy land. According to Hindu mythology the 'Panch Dham Yatra' journey of five main religious Hindu places is not complete without visiting the Neemsar or Naimisharanya, a religious ancient place in Sitapur. Dargah of Hazrat Makhdoom sb. at Khairabad and Hazrat Gulzar Shah are the symbols of communal harmony.

Sitapur has contributed in the social, historical, political and literary field in the country. Many freedom fighters gave their life to free India from British rule. Capt. Manoj Pandey sacrificed his life in Kargil War -1999 and honoured his birth place with Param Veer Chakra. The Sitapur Eye Hospital along with its 32 branch hospitals is serving eye patients throughout Uttar Pradesh and providing sight to visually challenged peoples. Ilasia Park, Mahaveer Park, Sarojini Vatika are the major gardens in the city. Vaidehi Vatika, Shahid Capt. Manoj Pandey monument and Shaurya Stambh are also important symbols of the city.

Whole district is divided into six tehsils - Sitapur, Biswan, Mishrikh, Laharpur, Mahmoodabad and Sidhauli. There are 19 blocks, two parliamentary constituencies (Sitapur, Mishrikh (SC)) and nine assembly constituencies ( Sewta, Biswan, Mahmoodabad, Sidhauli(SC), Laharpur, Sitapur, Hargaon(SC), Mishrikh and Maholi). Total population of the district is 28.57 Lacs and the area is 5743 Sq. Km. There are 2348 Census Villages and 1329 Gram Panchayats in the district.

History of Sitapur

District Sitapur is famous in India due to its mythological & historical background. There is no official description of its name but according to traditional belief Sitapur derieves its name from Lord Ram's wife Sita. It is said that she stayed with Lord Ram at this place during a pilgrimage. Afterwards, King Vikramaditya established this city in the memory of Sita, gave the place the name, Sitapur. According to the Abul Fazal's Aaina Akbari this place was called Chatyapur or Chitiapur during the reign of Akbar.

According to ancient history, this place was included in the Kingdom of Shingunags of Magadh, after the Kaushal Naresh son Bidudabh. After the fall of Nanda & Mauryas this area came into the power of Shunga dynasty. Some clay statues of Shunga style were found in tehsil Sidhauli. Similarly, some small statues of Gupta period were found in Badesar tehsil Mishrik.Holy place of Naimisharanya, situated on the left bank of Gomti, is a pilgrimage where Maharishi Ved Vyas created Purans.

There are signs of a large University in post Vedic period where 88000Rishis gained knowledge of Shastras. Shaunakji was the Vice Chancellor of this University. Pandhavas came to Naimish during exile. Lord Ram & Sita bathed at this pious place to wash off the stigma of Ravana's death. It is said that Sita proved her purity & assimilated in the pious soil of Naimish.

Sitapur district was always politically awakened. In the first Freedom Fight in 1857 this district played an important role. During 1857 Arya Samaj & Seva Samiti- had established their organisations in the district. In 1921 thousands of people of Sitapur took part in Gandhiji's Non-Cooperation Movement. Gandhiji came to Sitapur in 1925 & appealed to cooperate in the Freedom Movement at Lalbagh. Many National leaders- Maulana Mohammad Ali, Pandit Motilal, Pt. Jawaharlal were also present.

Geography of Sitapur

District Sitapur is situated in the central part of Lucknow division, capital of U.P. It is 27.6° to 27.54° longitude in north of Lucknow & in between 80.18° & 81.24° latitude in east of Lucknow. This district is spread about 89 km. area from north to south & about 112 km. area from east to west. River Gomti makes the boundary from west to south of Sitapur & Hardoi. In the east river Ghagra which separates district Bahraich from Sitapur.

On the north side is district Kheri. Thus, this district adjoins Barabanki, Baharaich, Kheri, Hardoi & Lucknow. Sitapur is divided into six tehsils- Sadar, Biswan, Mahmudabad, Sidhauli, Mishrikh & Leharpur.Main Rivers of this district are Gomti, Chowka, Ghagra & they have tributaries Sarain, Pirai, Gond, Godia, Kevani, Gadia, Ikharia etc.

Sitapur has mainly three types of soils - Bhood, Domat, Matiyar. Its minimum temperature is 6°C & maximum 43.34°C. Northern part of the district receives more rain because it is situated near to hills. Climate of Sitapur is healthy. It is situated 100m-150m above sea level. Agriculture is the main & important occupation of the district. Wheat, Rice & Urd are the main crops & Sugarcane, Mustard & Groundnuts are the cash crops.

Places to Visit

Namisharanya :

This Place was centre of religious and knowledge. There are 30,000 religious places here.88000 mendicants meditated here. People from all over India visit this holy place.

Chakratirth :

This place is the holiest in the Naimisharanya. It is said that Lord Brahma's Device Chakra fell this pious land and created a round "Kund" which is named as Chakra Tirth

Lalita Devi Temple :

This is very famous temple among religious devotees.

Panch Prayag :

This pond is situated near the Lalita Devi temple.

Vyas Gaddi :

It is situated near Chakratirth where Rishi divided vedas in four parts and also created Purans.

Soot Gaddi :

Soot and Shaunak had discourse at this place.

Sri Hanuman Garhi and Panch Pandav :

A statue of Lord Hanuman is situated here. When in Tretayug Ahi Ravana took Shri Ram Lakshman ji to another world (Paataal), then, Shri Hanuman ji slaughtered Ahi Ravana. While bringing Shri Ram Lakshman ji on his shoulders, Makardhvaj changed their path, due to which Shri Hanuman ji appeared apparently in Naimisharanya. Here the Path of Sunderkand holds uncanny grandeur.

Mishrit :

This is another religious place situated 10 KM away from Namisharanya. Maharishi Dadhichi Asharam and Sitakund are holy pilgrimage of this place.

Sitapur (Shyamnathan Temple): This Shiv Temple was built 300-400 years ago and is situated in old Sitapur City.

Machrehta :

In Aainae Akbari this place has been referred as more than 400 years old. This was the meditation place of Machendar Nath, hence this name. There is an old Inn, Imambara and many temples and mosques;

Mehmoodabad :

King Akbar's commander Nawab Mehmood Khan established this town. His predecessors ruled this place till Zamindari abolition.


Earlier it was known as "Balpur Pasau" created by pasis. In 1670 A.D. Aurangzeb presented this place to Bahadurbeg who named it as Aurangabad.

Bara Gaon:-

This is an ancient place. There are more mosque and pond which is called "Badesar".


A fakir Bishwer Nath established this town about 600 year ago and hence the town was called Biswan. The grave of Mumtaz Husain in Persian style made in 1047 Hijri is famous for its sturdiness. Many buildings, Dargah, Mosques, Inn etc. were made by Shekhbari in 1173 Hijri. Hazrat Gulzar Shah's Mazar is famous for communal harmony, where annual Urs/ Mela is held every year.


Famous King of Ayudhiya Harishchandra established this town. There is a pond named 'Suraj Kund' in this town, A Mela is also organized in the month of Kartik Poornima.


It was a place of pilgrimage in the times of King Vikarmaditya. Some say that Khaira pasi established this town in 11th century. Babar took it in his reign from Bahadur Khan in 1527. It remained under Humayun till he was defeated by Shershah. There were 25 palaces during the reign of Emperor Akbar which are now placed in Khiri & Hardoi districts. It was a big trading centre, where Kashmiri shawls, Jewels of Burmingham and Elephents of Assam were traded. It was the Commissionary of Awadh State at the time of Akbar and Lucknow was under the Khairabad. Imam bara and few other buildings are also places of major interest. Dargah of Hazrat Makhdoom sb. is famous among devotees.


In 1374 A.D. Firozshah Tuglak habilitated this place, after 30 years Pasis in the leadership of Lohari defeated him out and changed its name to Loharipur, which changed to 'Laharpur' in course of time. Raja Todar Mal, the revenue minister and Navratna of Akbar's Ministry, was born here.
